African elephant, and particularly so the cows can be born 'tuskless'. This is a genetic factor and in South Africa's Addo Elephant National Park, a high percentage of female elephant are tuskless. This is not too much of a disadvantage because of the habitat, it is mainly of a succulent type, and thus they don't really need to use their tusks as tools for stripping bark etc. Although the Addo elephant are vehicle habituated, in other parts of Africa tuskless cow elephant are invariably truculent and aggressive.
