Histology of a tongue seen from the inside out
This is a Trichrome (Masson's) of a rat tongue. Most of the tongue is muscle fibers, both longitudinal and cross sections (red) held together by collagen (blue). The very top layer top left, may contain taste buds but also the hooks with which animals use to lap up water.
