In 2009 I travelled Syria and explored the now-destroyed by ISIS ruins of Palmyra, Syria. Palmyra was an essential part of the Silk Road route linking China and India to Europe. Early rulers included the Assyrians, Persians and Seleucides and later the town fell to the Romans who then fell to Zenobia who then fell to the Muslim armies led by Khaled ibn al-Walid.
