Constructed in 1734 AD by the Fourth Chogyal, Gyurmed Namgyal, it was one of the major monasteries of Eastern Sikkim. Originally known by the name of Karma Chokhor Thubten Ling, it is popularly known as Old Rumtek Gompa. The old structure was dismantled and new building constructed. Lama dances are performed at this monastery on the 28th and 29th days of the tenth Tibetan month before the Sikkimese New Year.
