View from the Mediterranean at Marseilleââ¬â¢s iconic figure, Notre-Dame de la Garde or La Bonne Mère, watching over sailors, fishermen and the entire city. Garde Hill has always been an observation post and has three roles: a surveillance post, a military structure and a cult and pilgrimage site. On the left the War memorial for the Eastern Army in the First World War, Monument aux Morts d`Orient in Vallon des Auffes, a small, scenic, fishing village along the rocky coast near the french city of Marseille.
