Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi, Italy
The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi dominates the skyline of the hilltop town in Umbrian, Italy. It consists of two parts: an upper and a lower basilica, and is the burial place of St. Francis. The church construction was begun in 1228 right after St. Francis was canonized, and the entire complex was completed by 1253.
