Calcite is a mineral with highly variable forms and colours with Mohs hardness 3. High reactivity with even weak acids, and its prominent cleavage in most varieties. Vitreous, Sub-Vitreous, Resinous, Waxy, Pearly. Named as a mineral by Gaius Plinius Secundus Pliny the elder in 79 from Calx, Latin for Lime. Used in place of marble on walls.
